The Egg-bot is an open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects from the size of a ping pong ball to that of a small grapefruit. Or roughly 1.25 to 4.25 inches in diameter (4 - 10 cm). The gantry is adjustable and designed to draw on all kinds of things that are normally difficult to print on, like eggs! Eggbot can print on other spherical or elliptical objects such as golf balls, light bulbs, holiday ornaments and the like. This is an excellent kit project for kids and adults. Learn the basic principles of motion control. Or converting and image into machine code thus resulting in robotic action. I believe there may be a similar open source kit floating around called the SphereBot or Sphere-O-bot. This one runs on a standard Arduino.
Assembly of this machine was our very first workshop meetup at Tinkersmiths Makerspace. A dozen people showed up to kick off what had become a thriving culture of over 900 makers. Tinkersmiths is since shut down but was the most fun and learning experience imaginable.
